In the 1950s, in the heart of segregationist America, psychologists Mamie and Kenneth Clarke conducted an experiment with black children to measure the impact of racism on these children’s selfimage. Being wondering about the result of such experiment with African children in an African socio-cultural context, I carried out the test at the CEG Gbegamey in Cotonou (Benin) where I, myself started my schooling in 1978. I asked 10 children aged from six to eight to choose between two identical dolls, only the color of which was different: one black, the other white. I asked them to choose the one they wanted to be photographed with and why this choice. Out of 10 children, only 2 chose the black doll and their answers were quite revealing …
