“You must love your leader;
you must teach the people to love their leader;
this is the only most important thing”
General Idi Amin Dada
Sixty years of independence in Africa, seen through the prism of absolute power.
The series critiques the persistent challenges that continue to weaken the continent: nepotism, corruption, clientelism, and the manipulation of constitutions for personal gain. The project offers an allegorical representation of the various perversions that have emerged since independence, highlighting the troubling persistence of autocratic regimes.
Here, the throne is no longer a phoenix, like that of Emperor Bokassa in Central Africa, but a pigeon — a reference to the corrupt and power-hungry African heads of state who have succeeded one another… or not, since independence, often with the blessing of their former masters.
The work also underscores the role of former colonial powers, which continue to exert their influence in many African nations, frequently supporting leaders who place their personal interests above those of their citizens.
